Visionary Project

Description

A comprehensive Need Assessment Survey was conducted by our committee, and we have identified Shiv Adharbhut Vidyalaya, a school in Belgachi, Biratnagar, as the location for the project to be implemented. Around 3000 members of the Dalit & Mushar minority communities reside in the Eastern Tarai region of Nepal. The assessed school has a strength of 149 students, comprising 69 girls & 80 boys. The school is in an extremely poor condition, with hygiene & safety below even the bare minimum acceptable standards, and has an environment not suitable for a place of education. Therefore, through this project, we seek to achieve the following, in order to increase quality of education as well as retention, and to convert the school into a “Happy School”: • Installation of a drinking water station (with 3 taps) & water tank with stand in the school to facilitate access to clean drinking water. • Completion & Repair of the school boundary wall to ensure safety of students & school property. Re-painting of the school exteriors & interiors, including the school gate. • Repair of the 2 existing school toilets to ensure hygiene & sanitation and Construction of 2 additional toilets to make it more comfortable for female students & teachers. • Developing an outdoor play area cum park for the students in the school premises, including installation of swings & other equipment to create a fun learning atmosphere in the school, boosting retention rate. • Re-designing the Montessori (nursery) classroom area, including painting attractive images on walls, setting up 4 round tables for learning and repairing the flooring. • The school does not have an office currently, making administrative work extremely difficult. The project shall address this issue by partitioning one of the classrooms which is excessively large, and developing an office in the partitioned area, along with setting up required office furniture. • Repair of existing desks, chairs, flooring & doors in the classroom, as well as adding more desks, chairs, blackboards & fans to increase reach & facilitate a better learning experience for the children. • Installation of 2 computer sets including mouse and keyboard, 1 printer and desks & chair for the computers, in order to provide access to modern computer education at the school. This would also include a computer training session for the teachers. • To create an environment for “Happy School”, installing a school bell, notice boards & placing dustbins as per need. • Conducting Training Programs for students & teachers in the areas of WASH & BEL (detailed under training plans attached under Supporting Documents section) • Conducting Awareness Programs on Health, Hygiene & Sanitation for students & their parents. • Distribution of Hygiene Kits to students & their families. The direct beneficiaries of the project will be: • 149 students (69 girls, 80 boys) of the Community School and their families. • 11 teachers of the school. • Children aged 3-12 in the area, who will be encouraged to attend school if the proposed development occurs.
