GG2573548 Prevention of Corneal Blindness - Detection & Treatment Centre
Project Details
Description
We are planning to increase capacity building and provide facility at very reasonable cost to the patients by setting up Ocular surface analyzer, Autorefractokeratometer, Non-contact Tonometer with pachymeter and other associated machines at Indira Eye Centre, located at Ramghat Road in Aligarh, as part of a Global Grant from the Rotary Club of Aligarh Central, enabling it to treat eye patients of all ages effectively and affordably. This Eye Centre will be able to detect, treat and prevent many types of eye and cornea diseases after being outfitted with these ophthalmic equipment, including corneal refractive, dry eyes and ocular surface diseases. Objectives: The main objectives of this project are: 1.To increase capacity building and decrease the average cost of service to the patients. 2.To provide medical care for Cornea-related preventable diseases in an effective and economical manner. Project Activities: The beneficiary organization will get IDRA (Automated Ocular surface analyzer) Machine, Autorefractokeratometer, non-contact tonometer with pachymeter and associated machines installed as part of the primary project activity in order to increase the number of patients to serve and decrease the average cost of service to the patients. Healthy tear film is of vital importance for Cornea and Ocular surface. IDRA (Automated Ocular Surface analyzer) is a new non-invasive diagnostic test which studies tear film which is responsible for transparency of cornea and good corneal health. Ocular surface analyzer studies lipid layer thickness by interferometry, Non-invasive Break up time (NIBUT), Meibomian gland loss and Tear Meniscus Height. The new analyzer is an easy-to-access diagnostic tool to rule out the presence of Dry Eye disease in the extramural setting and to guide a timely treatment. The current private hospitals are charging 2000-2500 Rs approximately for Dry Eye diagnostics. We will provide the same service at a subsidized rate of 1000 Rs. That will meet out our operating cost only. Autorefractokeratometer delivers fast, reliable objective refraction and keratometry results for an in-depth assessment of the patient's condition. Keratometry helps in knowing the corneal shape, astigmatism, spherical refractive error, steep and flat axis. This can be used as a cost-effective screening machine. Those with abnormal refractive errors can be subjected to Pentacam; thus, decreasing the load on Pentacam so that more patients can be handled and average cost of service given to the patients is decreased. Non-contact tonometer (NCT) with pachymeter is a useful tool in eye clinic. Traditionally non-contact tonometer doesn’t have pachymeter, which measures corneal thickness that is very imp in estimating accurately intraocular pressure. So the intraocular pressure is either underestimated or overestimated. NCT with pachymeter thus avoids this confusion and accurately measures IOP.
